Visceral Manipulation: a Hands-on Therapy for All

Posted by:

Dr. Jenna is now offering Visceral Manipulation at Holistique! This hands-on therapy dates back to the 1800’s with Andrew Taylor Still, a Medical Doctor who sought out alternatives to allopathic care after he lost three of his children to meningitis and his wife to childbirth. Later, Jean-Pierre Barral, DO coined the term “Visceral Manipulation.” It was first used as a therapy to treat spinal issues, recognizing the relationship between muscles, joints, the sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system, the internal organs, and the spinal cord, and brain. Drs. Still and Barral explained that organs and tissues have an inherent movement pattern, separate from the respiratory breath. Traumas due to surgery, adhesions, injury, infections, posture, and emotional upset interfere with this inherent movement causing dysfunction within body’s tissues. Visceral Manipulation is used to improve circulation, lymphatic flow and nerve conduction to internal organs and structures, and over time, improve function within these areas. It can be used to treat many different conditions in men, women and children including muscular aches and pains, digestive issues, hormonal imbalance for both men and women, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, shortness of breath, incontinence, and much more. It is especially indicated for post-head injury and post-surgery to enhance the mobility of the underlying tissues and organs.

During the first Visceral Manipulation session, Dr. Jenna will ask about pain patterns you are experiencing and past trauma, then do a quick physical evaluation to identify the primary area(s) for treatment. Keep in mind that the area of pain/discomfort in the body is oftentimes not the area that needs to be treated first. The treatment is gentle and hands-on using both light and deep pressure to the abdomen. It is recommended that patients receive treatments every 1-2 weeks. The total number of treatments needed depends on the individual. Dr. Jenna is also trained in Craniosacral Therapy and will incorporate this into the Visceral Manipulation sessions, if indicated. She believes in hands-on therapies as part of whole person healing.
