What is Massage Therapy?

Massage is the application of soft-tissue manipulation techniques to the body, generally intended to reduce stress and fatigue while improving circulation. The many variations of massage account for several different techniques.

Massage is one of the oldest healing arts: Chinese records dating back 3,000 years document its use; the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians applied forms of massage for many ailments; and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems. Today, the benefits of massage are varied and far-reaching. As an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs, massage therapy has also proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including low back pain, arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, infertility, smoking cessation, depression, and more. And, as many millions will attest, massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living that can lead to disease and illness.

What to expect during your session.

Your massage session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music will be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort.

Must I be completely undressed?

Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped during the entire session. You will be covered at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.

How will I feel after the Massage?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage.

Are there any medical conditions that would make Massage inadvisable?

Yes. That’s why it’s imperative that, before you begin your session, the practitioner asks general health questions. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor’s care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior to any session. Your practitioner may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor.

Will my insurance cover it?

Therapies provided as part of a prescribed treatment by a physician or registered physical therapists are often covered by insurance. You will need to make sure and check with your specific insurance company to make sure that massage therapy is covered under your plan.

Who will be doing my Massage Therapy?

Robert Long is a licensed massage practitioner. He is National Board and Washington State Board Certified in massage. Robert specializes in deep tissue massage, trigger point release and lymphatic drainage. His massage techniques are powerful and effective in reducing chronic pain and inflammation.
