Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system. It is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Using a soft touch, generally no greater than 5 grams or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

By complementing, and encouraging, the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventative and supportive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, balance the central nervous system, balance hormones, and improve a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

Autism Emotional Difficulties
Motor-Coordination Impairments Scoliosis
Chronic Fatigue Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders Neurovascular or Immune Disorders Stress and Tension-Related Problems
Chronic Neck and Back Pain Infantile Disorders Orthopedic Problems Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
CNS Disorders Learning Disabilities Post-Surgical Dysfunction Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
Colic Migraine Headaches Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

CST is commonly recommended to patients undergoing Orthodontic treatment to relieve pressure, pain, and stress to the mandible and accompanying bone structures and to reduce headaches resulting from braces and dental appliances. It is also highly recommended for newborn children to balance the cranio sacral system, which gets traumatized during the birthing process. Restless and irritable newborns and infants often find relief with CST.

CST was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John Upledger following extensive scientific studies at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.
