Bio-Electric Impedance Analysis

What is BIA?

Bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a simple non-invasive tool that can aid our physicians in determining your general nutritional deficiencies and the degree of toxicity within your cells. BIA is an important tool for establishing weight loss, exercise, and detoxification programs.

BIA is similar to an EKG used in measuring the electricity around the heart.

What does a BIA measurement mean?

By measuring the impedance of electrical current running through the general body, the fat to lean muscle ratio can be determined.

Electrical resistance is low in lean tissue, where intracellular fluid and electrolytes are primarily contained, and high in fat tissue.

BIA can calculate the basic metabolic rate (BMR), your body composition (ratio between fat and lean muscle which determines your general risk for chronic disease and inflammation), your cellular hydration (which can determine toxicity levels), and the health of the cell wall (which defines essential fatty acid, nutritional and electrolyte deficiencies).

How long does a BIA take?

BIA is very quick, often taking less than 2 minutes to connect the electrolytes to you and run the test.

Do I need to prepare for a BIA?

Make sure you are well hydrated and have consumed a good amount of water for a few days prior to your test. The more hydrated you are the more accurate the test.
